Hold the Glamour

I am a full-figure model and working mother. I am a wife, a sister, a daughter, a friend. I am a Leo. I am a first-generation Aussie and mother to two amazing little native New Yorkers. I believe that fashion is important—but so is real life. I believe that all women are beautiful and strong. I believe in working hard and loving harder. I believe in eating delicious food and drink with close friends, in breathing deep the air of new places, in laughing until you cry. I believe that when our bodies and minds are healthy and balanced, anything is possible.

Fashion darlink!

Over the weekend I flew from New York to Sydney. It was a good flight, as long as a 27-hour, door-to-door travel experience goes. It’s a long way people however, worth it at both ends of the journey. I truly believe the more you do it, the more familiar the process becomes therefore, the easier or more bearable the trip becomes. I’ve been making this journey four times a year for almost 11 years. It adds up quickly.

This week, New York Fashion Week commences and simultaneously, Melbourne Spring Fashion week has been making a colourful splash. It is a fashion explosion of fabric, hair, make-up, accessories, music, flashes, people, celebrity and poses.

Already, there are trends for both the northern and southern hemispheres emerging. Colour that is bright, bold and even neon in palette is everywhere. Denim is back and beautiful. Some of my favourite colours include cobalt, teal and coral. Not to forget florals, lace, metallics, prints and the forever favourite of black are hot, hot, hot no matter where your plane is landing.

Speaking of cobalt, I was walking along 23rd Street last week in New York when I looked up and saw at least six people in front of me wearing hues of cobalt. I stared in wonder, laughed and struggled to get my phone out of my bag to take a photo. I was crossing 6th Avenue so it wasn’t particularly safe and sensible of me. As I reached the other side of 6th Ave, half of my cobalt people walked down the subway steps whilst the others continued along 23rd. My photo-op was over. It was a great, random vision of colour.

A that moment, I was reminded what a fashion trend was. When people embrace something that is being sold to them and run with it on mass – no matter what it is. It is a trend. It is fashion.

So get ready as the world of fashion darlink prepares to unleash its power of persuasion and wonder. Stirring up a need inside us to buy, buy, buy. A must have if you will!

What are some of your favourite pieces or trends that are coming off the runways?

What do you simply oppose?

Do you have any predictions to share?

Giving lady luck a shot in Atlantic City

My husband and I went away for the weekend with friends (who have two children of similar ages to our’s), for the first time since Mila was born almost four-and-a-half years ago. We were together, without children, overnight and away for over 24 hours. That means, we went to bed late and slept in without interruption to our precious sleep.

We drove to Atlantic City, New Jersey which is about two-and-a-half hours away without traffic. It took us a little longer with traffic and petrol/gas stops. We were ready to get out and stretch our legs by the time we arrived.

It was my first time to A.C. and I didn’t expect it to be so flat, on the coast and spread out like it was. It’s a little ‘Vegas’, where people come to gamble, see shows and get away from reality and daylight (we didn’t have a clock in our room). I’ve been to Vegas many times for both work and play and it’s on another level. Atlantic City is I guess, the east coast version of the gambling mecca.

We checked in and took the fast elevator up to the 36th floor – what an amazing view and spread before us. It was lovely to see the ocean and calm of the blue sky. I love being by the water and coastline – I guess that’s all I know as I’ve lived in Sydney and New York for most of my life.

Then it was time for Jen and I to hit the spa whilst the men folk hit the floor for a flutter or two. A perfect way to make everyone happy as Jen and I don’t really gamble nor do we know much about that kind of stuff. We do know however, about spa treatments and what makes us feel good.

We had an afternoon of bliss – facial, massage, spa, steam room and sauna. It was a sleepy, relaxing and hypnotic experience. I had a hard time ‘waking-up’. We had zero interruptions or commitments and the time was ours – what a novelty!

We return to our hotel room, get ready for dinner and meet our husbands at the restaurant. We inhale the food as we are well and truly hungry by now. We had a delicious meal accompanied with lovely wine to celebrate this first-time occasion (the kids were doing well and missing us just enough). Truth be told, they were excited that we had mentioned there may be a treat coming their way if they behaved well. I know you’re not supposed to ‘bribe’ your children – once in while is quite alright I think.

Next up, we all hit the floor. Jen and I received a crash course on the roulette table whilst the ‘men’ played with us dispersing chips of their own colour across the felt. We had some fun and killed some time then pulled out of the game just before we lost all our money. See, that’s why I don’t gamble with money.

I’d rather spend my money elsewhere and do other things with it. I personally believe when one is gambling, that you are giving the money away for free, for nothing. I found it rather sad, lonely and desperate to be honest. There were people from everywhere, young and old, people from all races giving lady luck a shot. It was a vortex of smoke, alcohol, lights, noise and people. I couldn’t believe they had designated ‘smoking’ areas. My hair and clothes stank like back in the day when people could smoke everywhere and anywhere. Haven’t times changed for the better?!

The next day we slept, ate, checked out and drove back home toward New York City. We passed a flea market that seemed like it was stuck in some time warp or better still, a Hollywood movie. We stopped and took a look around. It was hot, quiet and I felt sorry for the people trying to make a sale under such conditions and desperation.

By the time we made it home – the four of us couldn’t wait to wrap ourselves around our angels. We had missed them and it was wonderful to have had the opportunity to have missed them. Kisses and hugs were flowing for hours. We went for a walk around our neighborhood, then back for dinner, bath and bedtime. Another day, another weekend etched into our memory. Another fun weekend with our friends.

Have you ever been to Atlantic City? A casino or place to gamble? What did you think about it? Would you return?

We started shooting the spring and summer catalogues for Sara by Ezibuy last Friday in a studio in Sydney at 8am. Traffic is a part of Sydney life and it took me an hour to get to work (that was with no traffic accidents or incidents). Once inside the studio, Annette McKenzie (genius) starts on hair and make-up. By 10am we were ready, Juli Balla (photographer) and the crew were ready to start shooting the new season looks.

Scanning the racks of clothes once I was ready to get changed I noticed there were some key pieces that I really liked and simply had to have. The new season clothes were bright, colourful and included skinny jeans that fit me like a glove (one of my all time favs). Stripes are still very much in and still one of my favourite trends. There was a navy and a tea coloured linen jacket that I really liked too. Having basic neutrals in your wardrobe is a must in my opinion. It’s all about variety and versatility.

This routine continues over the next few days in studio. Our days of shooting merge into one as the days go by. At the end of our Sydney stint we head up to Palm Beach (Northern Beaches of Sydney) to get some location shots done. One can’t go any further than Palm Beach and its a 45 min – 1 hour drive north of Sydney (depending on traffic of course).

Palm Beach is somewhat far for the crew to travel and we mumble to ourselves about the distance and 6.45am call time however, once we are there and Andrea Rowe (amazing producer extraordinaire) walks in with delicious coffee and we have a moment to enjoy and take in the breathtaking views, we soon realise how divinely beautiful and blue this part of the world is. What were we saying?

From New York to Sydney

I started this post in New York on Monday just prior to being picked up and taken to JFK airport. I had a plane to catch… I was on my way to Sydney, Australia to shoot for Sara, Ezibuy and due to ‘technical difficulties’ was unable to complete my post. So here we go, take two!

This morning I had my highlights done and I feel so much better. It had been a while. I went to Cutler Soho this time on West Broadway and had the wonderful Ben Stewart take care of me and my roots. I was in his chair by 9am and had to be… I had an international flight to catch. Ben highlighted one side of my hair then the other.  His assistant Jen rinsed one side then the other. It is a process and the colour takes time to develop. Ben can’t rush the process even though he knows I’m watching the clock constantly. I drive him crazy I’m sure.

It’s a mad dash home. I’m packed and ready to go so I shower, change and try to spend as much time with Steve and the kids as possible before Luis picks me up and drives me to JFK airport, Terminal 7. I’m flying with Qantas on QF108 from New York to Sydney, via Los Angeles. My journey to my parent’s place door-to-door is approximately 27 hours. It is very long indeed. I try to see it this way… I have something to look forward to at each end of my trip. When traveling to Australia I have my mum, sister, family and friends to see and returning home to New York I have Steve, Mila and Levi to rush home to.

It is certainly an adjustment being away from my sweet angels for almost two-and-a-half-weeks. It is an adjustment for us all in fact. We speak, email &/or text everyday and there’s a constant flow of pictures between my family in New York and me in Australia. We miss each other terribly.

So I leave on Monday night, am in transit on Tuesday and arrive in to Sydney on Wednesday. My first day is spent getting waxed, having a mani/pedi and catching up with family for an early dinner. My lights are out by 9.30pm. It is the deepest and sweetest of sleeps. I’m awake by 3am and drift off again by 5am. Don’t you love jet lag? What tricks do you have? Any tips to share?

My second day in the Land of Oz, I go and visit an aunt and uncle in the morning and after returning to mum’s for lunch I finally get to unpack and go through mail that has accumulated over the last three months since I was here last. Calls and emails take up most of my afternoon in the office before retiring by 9pm… Ready for my 6am start and day one of my Sara shoot in a studio in Sydney.

Welcome to my world!

This is... Me!

‘Wow’ and ‘hi’… My first post on my blog ‘Hold the Glamour’. I’m rather nervous and super excited at the same time. Welcome to my world!

I hope to share with you moments and snippets of my world, life, family, career and the everyday… That my days really aren’t as glam as one might imagine and that there isn’t only glamour in my life. There are many times I’m feeling the glamour and in some kind of glamour somewhere however, mostly, I’m a daughter, sister, wife and mother who works and travels for her work… All over the place in fact, a global citizen if you will.

I will no doubt express an opinion about most things… Good health and lifestyle, the protection and care of our children and the helpless in this world, environmental issues that are close to my heart, the eye-opening and exciting world of travel, what’s hot in a New York minute and let’s not forget fashion dahlink! and sexy, womanly curves! It’s all here at some point of my day, week or month.

This week has been a rather difficult one for me personally and emotionally as my husband Steve and daughter Mila are in Hawaii (I KNOW). To be honest, I’m not used to being the one at home whilst members of my family are away. There is a definite shift that happens and our home is SO quiet and different. Levi (our two-year old son) & I miss them terribly however, they are having the times of their lives. Their photos and videos prove it.

Anyway, Steve is an artist & singer/songwriter and he has an art exhibition commencing on March 31 (our darling Mila’s fourth birthday). If you happen to be in Kailua, HI (Oahu) on the evening or during the month of April, feel free to stop by MU’UMU’U Heaven (a must see fashion retail experience) and check out Steve’s collection of contemporary pieces. Let’s not forget you’ll visit a dynamic fashion brand of fun-loving and vintage-loving clothes, home decor & accessories. I have many pieces in my wardrobe and home to talk about.

In the meantime, Levi and I are kicking back in the big apple, enjoying the freakishly warm spring-like weather in New York. We are partying with the best of the four-year old’s born in the spring of the Northeast as we go from one household to another on our weekends… It’s one, big, two-day event at a time.

Here’s to glamourous events in our lives!
