Hold the Glamour

I am a full-figure model and working mother. I am a wife, a sister, a daughter, a friend. I am a Leo. I am a first-generation Aussie and mother to two amazing little native New Yorkers. I believe that fashion is important—but so is real life. I believe that all women are beautiful and strong. I believe in working hard and loving harder. I believe in eating delicious food and drink with close friends, in breathing deep the air of new places, in laughing until you cry. I believe that when our bodies and minds are healthy and balanced, anything is possible.

Body Confidence

Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season and are calmly and slowly easing in to 2015.

This year has been bright and busy for me personally and for that I am most grateful and thankful.

Today, in The Australian Women’s Weekly (AWW is a monthly publication), my Body Confidence editorial came out. I love the six-page story which features four other gorgeous curvy girls and myself naked.

It was the first time I stripped down to my skin for a shoot and it was liberating, thrilling and a little frightening at the same time. My agent assured me AWW wouldn’t do anything that wasn’t beautiful or respectful.

I was so happy and excited to be a part of the Body Issue and the result of our photo series which was inspired by the Renaissance artists speaks for itself.

Get yourself a copy or see it online.

Thank you AWW for understanding, accepting and promoting that beauty comes in all shapes and sizes. I am a fan.

Happy Holidays, Merry Christmas and all the very best for 2015!

With only days left before this year ends and another one begins, I start to marvel at how fast time flies and how much my children have grown, comparing this year’s Santa photo to last year’s.

What a year 2014 has been — the global events that have shaped and changed our world forever and etched themselves into history. There are so many wonderful things to be grateful and thankful for and then for some, unfortunately there isn’t.

During my last week of work for 2014, a man took innocent people hostage in a Sydney cafe — what a time, what an outcome and what an amazing city — it’s just one of so many events that occurred this year, both good and bad.

To all those who are lost, hurt, suffering and mourning at this time, my heart goes out to you.

I have some behind-the-scene shots of the autumn catalogue I shot for Modern Curve which happens to be one of my last shoots for 2014.

Love your curves!

I have a new fashion editorial out this week in Australia’s New Idea magazine — it’s a spring fashion spread for women with gorgeous curves. I love it!

I also love the fabulous colours and prints on the pages below and was so excited to wear these beautiful, comfortable, flattering and fashionable outfits.

The photographer, David Gubert and Fashion Director, Julie Russell are simply, a phenomenal team. The very talented Craig Beaglehole had me in the hair and make-up chair, weaving his beauty magic.

Thank you New Idea for the opportunity to showcase fashion for the average-sized woman. I am thrilled curvy women have so many options and choices in fashion, now more than ever.

What are you getting excited for in spring fashion in the Southern Hemisphere and fall fashion in the Northern?

What are your favourite colour palettes this season? What about prints?

How do your feel about your curves and fashion — regardless of your size?

Love your curves ladies!

Be well.

Loving the KOSMEA skin care range

Whilst in Australia recently, a dear friend gave me the KOSMEA radiance 24/7 youth boost as a gift. She too is very much into putting natural/organic products on her skin and highly recommended the product she loved and used on her face.

I use the oil (2-3 drops over a moistened face) most nights and I especially love it when traveling. It smells yummy too which is important to me.

Since then, my lovely mother-in-law kindly gave me the KOSMEA starter pack as a gift (aren’t I lucky?). I especially love the hydrating rosewater mist, skin clinic and the rescue balm products.

I can’t seem to hydrate my skin enough these days with all the travel I do and the different climates I’m putting my body and skin through in any one month.

You can find out more about KOSMEA and their broad skin care range below… Enjoy!

Glowing green

Happy 2014 to you! Hope you’ve had a great start to the New Year.

The holiday break was short and sweet with a lot of yummy food and delicious wine celebrated and consumed with family and friends.

With the festive season so recently behind us, it was back to work on Monday shooting for Ezibuy in Sydney, Australia. It was time to return to healthy eating habits like drinking Kimberly Snyder’s Glowing Green Smoothie for breakfast.

I make and drink it when I’m home and not on ‘holiday’ or traveling as it’s challenging to do so. Most of the time is good for me and then I have it made at a juice bar when I come across one during my travels.

Not only does it taste good, it does good for your complexion and health. I love it. At least I know it’s a fabulous and healthy start to my day.

Kimberly Snyder’s Glowing Green Smoothie

Ingredients
12-16 oz filtered water
1 head romaine lettuce
1 cup spinach
3 celery stalks
1 apple (cored)
1 pear
1 banana
Juice of ½ lemon
1 cup ice (if desired)

Instructions
Place all the ingredients in the blender jar in the order listed.
Turn on your blender (Vitamix is one of the best to use) and quickly increase the speed to HIGH.
Run the blender for at least two minutes or until the ingredients are completely smooth.

Serves: 5-6 cups.

For more beauty tips, healthy recipes etc. from Kimberly, please see below.

http://kimberlysnyder.net/

Do you have your own recipe of a ‘green smoothie’ you love? If so, what is it?

What healthy breakfast can you not go without?

Next up, I’m back to the US of A. I hope the great freeze will be well and truly over! Fingers crossed… Till next time.

Great ways to keep your skin hydrated

Our skin is constantly changing and one thing that we all do too often is strip it from essential oils and nutrients that keep our skin soft, subtle and hydrated.

Since giving birth to my two children, my skin has changed. It has become more sensitive and where I used to have combination skin, now it is normal to dry in the colder months.

These days, I tend to moisturise my skin with gentle, natural products that are rich oils, creams and lotions without the toxic chemicals that harm and build up over time.

My cleanser of choice is an oil. I wear a lot of make-up for my work so taking those products off my face gently and effectively is most important. I love Shu Uemura’s Skin Purifier cleansing beauty oil.

http://www.shuuemura-usa.com/product/CLEANSING-BEAUTY-OIL-PREMIUM-AI,default,pd.html#start=2&cgid=skincare-cleanser-remover

I cleanse once a day only and apply moisturiser twice a day for maximum hydration. As mentioned previously in another post of mine, I am hooked on Weleda’s Skin Food. I use it morning and night to feed the skin on my face what it needs and deserves.

http://usa.weleda.com/our-products/shop/skin-food.aspx

When the weather is warmer, I love to use Weleda Baby Face Cream. It’s a lightweight and soothing moisturiser that still hydrates my skin without feeling too heavy or looking too shiny.

For my body, I have been using Alba Botanica Maximum Body Moisturiser for many years. I love the way it feels and smells and I apply it to my body after I shower.

Armani Luminous Silk Foundation

My family and I recently arrived in Sydney, Australia. So far it has been a relaxing time spent with family and friends. It’s been a while since Steve and the kids were here so everyone wants to see them and see how our children have grown.

I start shooting for Sara by Ezibuy in a matter of days so prior to leaving New York, I made sure I purchased a new bottle of my favourite foundation I’ve been using for over six years. Armani Luminous Silk Foundation gives me the coverage I need whilst feeling light and looking smooth and natural on my face.

http://www.giorgioarmanibeauty-usa.com/luminous-silk-foundation/A041,default,pd.html

I have had many different brands and products applied to my face over the course of my career and no foundation in my opinion, comes close to Armani. I buy my own and have the make-up artist apply it for each and every job. Most of them are happy to use my personal foundation, if they don’t already use Armani themselves.

Make sure when you buy any foundation for the first time, you have a consultant assist you. Getting the right shade is very important for a colour match that you want to look natural. A good guide is to apply your foundation on the inside of your arm or wrist. The colour or shade you see the least, is generally the right one for you.

Mascara madness

You might know me well enough by now to know that I LOVE a great mascara. It opens up and frames your eye beautifully and every women should invest in a great eyelash curler and mascara. That is my humble opinion.

Well, I found myself a new one today. Whilst on a shoot, the hair & make-up artist pulled out a brand new mascara and I loved it! It’s by Maybelline New York and it’s called “The Falsies Volum’ Express”. It’s a purple/magenta colour with light blue writing on it. Please see the link below for more details. It’s not new to Maybelline however, it was new to me. It gives good lash.

Happy Mother’s Day

Happy Mother’s Day to all the mother’s out there in the world. I hope you have a wonderful day, spent with your loved and treasured ones. May today be a reminder of the amazing and brilliant things you do, everyday. Enjoy!

We are running out the door for the day however, I wanted to let you know it’s a beautiful, sunny day in Brooklyn. I have made sure to put my L’OREAL Revitalift Miracle Blur on my face after my Weleda Skin Food moisturiser. It has a SPF30 sunscreen in it – I don’t want to get burnt and I want to look my best. This stuff rocks my world and my face!

We are about to go and have brunch at our local, favourite place Bar-Tabac, then we are heading to Manhattan – on Broadway to see The Lion King. We are all so excited and what better way to spend Mother’s Day, than with my precious family that I love and adore.

It’s all about slowing down to smell the roses…

Have a fabulous day, wherever you are in the world!

How to look your best according to Liz Polden

I’m on a roll here in New York, turning to my friends who happen to be industry professionals and experts in the fields of fashion and beauty. This week I’d like to introduce you to my friend and stylist in times of need, Liz Polden. I love her aesthetic and approach to fashion and life… It is simple, clean and classic. She is a unique woman and I love her to bits. Here is a snippet of our time together for Hold the Glamour!

ME (L): Liz, what styling tips can you share with us that are your BIG ones? I know there are many however…

Liz Polden (LP): My first advice to clients is to shop in your own closet. What colours are you drawn to? What shapes do you love to wear? In which outfit do you hear the most compliments? If you have a stack of clothes that make you feel big and unattractive, donate them immediately. Fill the closet with only items you adore and make you feel like the best you!

Even though I have been a fashion stylist since 2005 and constantly surrounded by amazing clothing, I am a passionate closet minimalist. I know what works for my body and my own insecurities and don’t shop much outside of that box. I just like to keep all simple and classic and throw in trends with my accessories.  It makes dressing less of a chore. And whenever I feel like I have nothing to wear, I empty the whole closet and re-evaluate; making a list of what trend I could add to my existing wardrobe to make it all more current and new.

L: That is a great start and fabulous advice for anyone. How does one get started?

LP: Start with a basic shape that works on your body type and for your lifestyle. Now repeat! Buy in multiples when something works. Think of Jackie O. She repeated the sheath dress without a care. It worked for her and she worked it well! If one shape gives you confidence, keep it in rotation. Make yourself a uniform of sorts.

My go to uniform shapes at the moment are skinny jeans, ballet flats and slouchy tee or a fitted mini skirt with wooden clogs and silky tank. Keeping a consistent look, I almost get obsessed with something and then wear it to death until one day I’m over it. Don’t be afraid to own a very minimal amount of clothing. Quality over quantity is so important to look polished and chic.

Shop online, discount stores on off hours or hit a sample sale of a designer you know you already love and will wear ’til the seams bust. Don’t buy for the price! Buy for the longevity and ease the item will have working into your current wardrobe and lifestyle.

L: What about colour Liz? I have a lot of black in my wardrobe and am conscious of wearing other colours to vary my look and feel.

LP: Colour is your friend in these warm months! I adore black. A little too much, like most people in the fashion industry. But once I get a little tan and a feel of warmth I want something fun and bright. I love to accessorize with brights and keep my clothing neutral once the temperatures rise.

I love the look of white skinny jeans and a bright striped tank, a cute straw fedora hat to keep the sun off your precious face, a wrist layered with colorful beaded bracelets and a bright hand-stitched fabric messenger bag like one I found on a trip to Peru and my favorite reusable tote by Baggu in neon purple for the farmer’s market or random finds!

L: I can totally see you wearing those clothes! And looking hot may I add. What about shoes Liz? There are so many fashionable trends right now… Where do we start for the season?

LP: Shoes can always make the outfit stylish or not.  No matter what you’re wearing if you have a glamorous or trendy shoe on, you will look the part.  My favorite shoes for this time of year are Repetto ballet flats, Worishofer cork wedges and Hasbeen wooden clogs.

As soon as I buy new shoes, I always hit the shoe repair shop and have my friends there re-sole the bottoms with rubber soles to extend the longevity of my big purchase. Everyone should know their local shoe cobbler! Shoes can usually be re-soled, re-polished and saved from the depths of the already overfilled landfills, saving our planet and your wallet!

Before the beginning of each season, I drop off all my shoes for some love. I have many pairs of shoes that look almost brand new but are actually closer to 5 years old! Each shoe sole and material is different and a good cobbler will tell you when to bring them back for extra care. Don’t replace before you try a polish or a new sole.

Trying to buy less leather, my newest additions to my own shoe collection are vegan strappy nude platform pumps and vegan gold studded nude sandals from www.lulus.com. I am planning to wear them both non stop this summer with flowy dresses and silky shorts!

L: I can’t forget accessories! Nor can you Liz… You can rock any accessory.

LP: Wear statement jewels! I wear the same signature jewelry most days. On my fingers I like to layer delicate hammered gold rings on a few fingers along with my engagement ring and wedding band, a Me and Ro necklace that says “wisdom” that was gifted on my 30th birthday from my best friend and always a few delicate beaded bracelets like my precious gold flag bracelet by Iwona Ludyga, mixed with random bracelets I have fallen for at the moment.

Support the small designers! I love to shop for jewelry from small designers on Etsy. You get so much more love and usually at a much lower price point. I adore my quartz crystal necklace from The Village Idiot and brass bangle from SD Marie Jewelry.

L: What advice do you have generally for people out there reading this post of ours?

LP: Make sure to go shopping when you have no reason to. You will be more likely to score the perfect dress, jeans or bikini when all pressure is off. I just bought two dresses and two pairs of shoes for weddings I have at the end of this year. It seems crazy to shop so far in advance but I know I found something I truly love, will feel good in and at a price that works for my budget. I love to do a calculation of how many times I will wear something divided by the total price. I get excited to think how far my clothing budget is going and how less will end up abandoned in a landfill or a donation rack.

Make best friends with your tailor! Almost everything can and should be tailored to your shape and height. Always fit the clothes with the shoes you will be wearing. I am petite but curvy and almost everything in my closet has been loved and re-worked by my local tailor.  You’d be surprised how reasonable the price to tailor most things can be and in the end you will wear the item more because you will look and feel so damn hot!

Stay organised! When your closet is organized and happy you will find it so much more inspiring to make cute outfits. I use black felt hangers for tops and dresses, metal bottom hangers for the skirts and pants and wooden hangers for the heavier coats. Organize your space in a way that cuts time in your mad morning rush. I like to keep all like shapes together, pulling together one of my standard uniform looks as I dress but others find hanging outfits together helps the stress of what to wear. Check out the new website www.stylitics.com. You can build a virtual closet, mix and match outfits from items you already have and even get some styling inspiration. My own virtual closet should be posted soon!

L: Thank you Liz. You shared some simple yet doable tips that I can even manage and implement into my life and closet/wardrobe. I am so grateful.
